INSTRUCTIONS: Create an essay outline from one of the topics listed below, using APA
Referencing. N.B. Topics should be narrowed.

After selecting the topic students MUST:
a. Research the topic
b. Write an essay outline
c. Include a reference list with at least three (3) appropriate sources
d. Complete the final essay in no more than 1000 words
NB. Students must submit the essay outline at least one week prior to the peer review. This will be marked and returned to students for use during the actual writing process.
The first draft of the essay will be written in class and peer reviewed.

Essay Outline
An essay outline is probably the most important friend you will have while writing your essay. It is the scaffolding of your paper and the skeleton of your ideas. It is the framework by which you will write a killer essay. And frankly, it is difficult to write one without an outline.
When you begin writing an essay outline, use the following model as a guide:

If you use this rough guide and fill in the blanks as you are researching your essay, you will find writing the essay so simple. You have all you need in front of you. It is researched and organized. All you have to do now is fill in the blanks with transition words and smooth language.
Rubric for Expository Essay
Content 10 marks
Award 8 -10 marks if all or most of the information given is accurate. Topic sentences are supported by relevant details such as definitions, explanations and examples. There is evidence of research. At least
Award 1-2 marks if very little information is given; information is vague and inconclusive. The essay does not address some of the major issues or it suggests that the writer is mis-informed or has very little information on the topic.
Award 0 if the student fails to answer the question.
Organization 7 marks
Award 5 – 7 marks if there is an excellent introduction, conclusion and body paragraphs. There is a clear thesis statement and topic sentences. There are clearly marked paragraphs, each of which develops a single point. Transitions are used effectively within and between paragraphs. Information is correctly cited using APA documentation style.
Award 3 – 4 marks if the essay is structured with introduction, body paragraphs and conclusion with some weakness in point development. There are minimal errors in citation.
Award 2 marks if the thesis statement is weak or unclear. Introduction and conclusion are present but are not well structured. There is evidence of dis-organization. Points are disconnected.
Award 1 mark if the introductory and final paragraph are not correctly structured. There is no thesis statement; no transitions and body paragraphs are dis-organized.
