Developing cultural competence and cultural humility is paramount when leading, managing, and building partnership to leverage community and organizational strengths in the public health sector. The purpose of this assignment is to examine the cultural aspects and public health needs of different communities in order to successfully prioritize and implement effective interventions as a public health leader at the community level.
Part 1
As an individual, conduct research about your own community, or a culture of your choice, and create a short PowerPoint to share your findings with your group.
To select your community/cultural group, go to the Healthy People website and search for a cultural group or population. Browse objectives by topic. Once you have identified the community you will research, select a health-related goal that will be the focus of a community health intervention.
Example: Goal: Improve cardiovascular health and reduce deaths from heart disease and stroke.
NOTE: You may not select Heart Disease and Stroke for your project.
After you have selected a goal, conduct additional research to help you formulate strategies for managing the goal-related health issue within the selected community/culture.
Create an 8-10-slide PowerPoint presentation to present your findings to the group. Include speaker notes for each slide and a final slide for your reference page.
1. Summarize the community/culture that was researched. Include how structural bias, social inequity or racism has contributed to health inequity for this group.
2. Describe the health goal that will be the focus of the intervention.
3. Explain how culture and other factors impact the social organization and leadership of the community.
4. Describe three social networks or ethnic organizations that could be used to learn about the social organization of the group, and to identify and engage its leaders.
5. List three challenges that could be encountered when working in this community or culture.
6. Propose three strategies that can be applied to manage the goal-related health issue within the selected community/culture.
