TITLE: STORYTELLING
Introduction
In this module, you have learned that storytelling can stand alone with just the presenter’s imagination or it can be used to enhance a book by adding gestures, words, and voice overs for the characters. Storytelling allows the child to formulate a mental image of the setting, characters, and actions from the story and these mental images can be different from child to child. Upon successful completion of this module, you will have planned oral language development experiences through storytelling and listed caregiver techniques in storytelling, in order to peak a child’s interest, respectively.
The Assignment – Google and watch You Tubes of the the videos of two of the books below. Select two of the stories below.
Brown Bear, Brown Bear
Five Little Monkeys Jumping on the Bed
Llama Llama Mad at Momma
Chicka Chicka Boom Boom
Think about a strategy for sharing that story with young children. How would you present this story to a child? What would you change about the approach that is shown in the video? What techniques are you going to use as the storyteller to keep the child’s interest?
Be sure to include extensions for the story through reading, writing, listening, and speaking. These extensions might include follow-up activities in learning centers throughout the classroom. They might also include ideas for repeated readings of the story.
