OVERVIEW: The final project requires you to investigate any current event or social phenomena. The goal of the project is to conduct a critical investigation of that social phenomena using a sociological imagination. You will then
produce a reflection essay that focuses on how that moment or series of events can be analyzed through 3 specific lenses:
1) how do mass media platforms (television, news, social media, movies etc.) view and share information on the current event or social phenomena
2) what does the scientific and academic community say through research about the current event or social phenomena
3) what do you personally think about the current event or social phenomena and share what evidence you draw your conclusions from
For example, you could examine topics like climate change, homelessness, gun violence, pro-choice/pro-life, COVID-19 etc.
DIRECTIONS: On the due date listed above, you will provide me with a short essay which highlights
what you have learned from your experience.
Format: The short essay should be written in a collegiate level format and style. Feel free to use the style most appropriate for your current/future field of study (MLA, APA, ASA etc.). Let your personality come through in your writing! The essay will be (5-7) pages in length. Exceeding the page limit does not warrant a higher grade. Use Times New Roman, size 12 font, with standard 1” margins. Please use headers to clearly differentiate the sections of your essay.
Content: Your essay should reflect your critical thinking skillset that we have developed during any of the 16 weeks of this course. The goal is to have these specific sections completed with thorough research introduction of the issue.
