Just find a city in Ohio.
Find an example of a project financed by municipal bonds in your hometown. This could be a project undertaken by the city, county, or school district where you went to high school.
First, visit the EMMA Website and click on your home state.(https://emma.msrb.org/Home/Index) This will bring up a list, then search for your city or school district in “Search Within List.” Then select the city or school district under “Issuer Name.”
Next, select one of the securities (bonds) and click on the tab that says “Official Statement.” This should bring up a PDF document that describes the MSRB documentation for the bond issue. Within the first few pages, you will find a description of the project. Use that information to answer these questions:
1. What is the nature of the project? In other words, why does the entity borrow money?
2. What is the total principal of the bond issue, or how much debt is being issued?
3. Over how many years will the bond be repaid?
4. What funding source is backing the bond? If it is a revenue bond, how is the project able to generate revenue to pay back the bond? If it is a general obligation bond, what source of tax revenue is being used to guarantee the bond?
There is no need to dive deeply into the official statement. Usually, you can find everything you need on the first 5-10 pages of the document. Post a link to the PDF of the official statement.
