Choose a quotation from The Odyssey, from Book10- 17, and analyze it, using close reading to write an analysis of 400 words (minimum; if you are inspired, feel free to write more; the quotation itself does not count toward the minimum). Close reading involves:
1. Examining what the text says (what it means)
2. Examining how the text says what it says (word choice, emphasis, selection of details, etc.)
3. Discussing how this passage connects to the text as a whole so far (that is, through Book 17).
4. Identifying ways in which the passage is or is not relatable or relevant to today, and why.
5. Indicating your remaining questions about the passage.
Assignment notes:
I am not asking you to write a summary of the whole text. Instead, you are working with a quotation that you find meaningful, intriguing, or confusing, and that you choose to work with.
I will excuse you from providing a Works Cited list for close readings unless you use outside sources or materials; in that case, you must provide a Works Cited in addition to in-text citations to avoid plagiarizing. Note that this assignment does not require outside research—and in fact, you will better develop your analytical skills if you choose the quote and work with the text yourself.
Please submit your assignment as a file upload rather than copying and pasting.
