ESSAY EXAM #1
ESSAY PROMPT
Liberty and Equality are two foundational ideals essential to American democracy. Yet, they have frequently grated coarsely against one another in gritty and unforgiving ways. A poignant example lies in the WWII era. During WWII, U.S. troops risked their lives to liberate Jewish captives abroad in German concentration camps, while denying U.S. citizens of Japanese ancestry their individual liberties at home (forcing them to abandon their private homes, property, and businesses) while relocating them to isolated “Americanization” camps because these U.S. citizens were perceived to be a threat due to their race and ancestry despite no credible evidence to suggest questionable loyalty issues with them.
Please discuss how (or if) liberty and equality can be reconciled in the following situation: a website designing business that creates websites for weddings does not want to create a website celebrating a same-sex marriage, but this runs afoul of state anti-discriminatory laws that prohibit discrimination by private businesses based on race, sex, ethnicity, and sexual orientation.
Should government be allowed to require private businesses to service customers they do not wish to service for religious reasons? If government is not permitted to regulate such activity, what happens if businesses begin to discriminate based on other categories like race, sex, and ethnicity? [where is the line or boundary to prohibit discriminatory behavior?].
[please use concrete examples].
